On our way out to Denver for the American Cichlid Association 2013 convention, we (or I) decided to stop at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, KS. It was well worth the stop. We got there quite early to beat the heat as well as to leave sufficient travel time to our next stop that evening. The zoo was very well done, and as well as being very well laid out. There was quite a bit of tree cover, so even though it was going to be approaching 100 degrees that day, it wasn’t unbearable. It’s also very encouraging to see a zoo with new additions being planned.
The had a fairly large collection of animals, and the zookeepers really seemed to enjoy their animals. Several years ago, my grand-daughter had requested that we get a picture of an Okapi for her friend. We had to go to 4 or 5 different zoos before we finally found some I could photograph. The Sedgwick County Zoo had a small group of maybe 6 Okapi that were out in the yard so I could photograph them. I was impressed.
We are sort of zoo junkies, and I can say that the Sedgwick County Zoo was well worth the trip, and is one of the better regional zoos that we’ve been to. Denny
